BIO

Joseph McInerney is a senior researcher in education studies with 15 years of experience as an evaluator, protocol designer, program analyst, textbook reviewer, test item developer, site visitor/observer, project manager, panel moderator, as well as case study and report writer. He has worked on evaluations for federal and state agencies and for textbook and digital media publishers. At Westat, Mr. McInerney has been involved in evaluations of projects focusing on K-20 STEM education, Teacher Incentive Fund evaluations, teacher leadership in school districts, and textbook studies. He has a particular interest in the digital integration of instruction, student-centered coaching (SCC), large-scale STEM education initiatives, teacher preparation and career paths, and the influence of community college and university disciplinary faculty on K-12 teachers' subject matter knowledge. Mr. McInerney has formally observed several hundred K-20 classrooms and numerous professional development institutes. He has interviewed, in detail, dozens of STEM disciplinary faculty, including a Nobelist. Previous to his research work, Mr. McInerney taught for three decades at the K-12 level, developed curriculum locally and nationally, and taught a new teacher preparation course at the university level (Tufts). He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (1992) and was an Einstein Fellow at NSF (1998-2002).
